I finally sucked it up and gave B a bowl of cereal to eat by himself. Up until now I have been feeding him, with a spoon, by myself. I know what you're thinking - "He's 18 months old. Give the kid a spoon already!" In my defense, I only have one child & have the time to do it this way. That, and my child with any type of liquid + carpeted eating area = a mess I do not feel like dealing with.
(Whoever came up with the idea of a carpeted eating area must not have had children. Or they were drunk. Or something.)
Here is how it began:
And how it ended:
Worthy effort, don't you think?
And yes, I'm aware that I said "Is that good Cheerios?" I'm a little embarressed by that comment.

Niiiiice. Is he eating better than he was when I was there? How's that going?
Chelsea Marie!! Let your poor child feed himself....he's never gonna learn if you don't let him do it! Yes, it's messy, yes, it's a pain to clean up. But that's kids for ya....just wait till you potty train him.
(To Bentley:)
That's right! You show your mom how good you can do it! Every morning you DEMAND for that spoon and tell her get outta here! Make her clean up the mess for holding you back for so long.....you go, man.
Charlie got frustrated trying to feed himself yogurt and ended up picking up the carton and trying to drink it.
I'm with Jody - you're nuts (or brave, maybe?) for waiting. The longer you make him wait to try it on his own, the longer it will take for him to get really good at it. You may have prolonged the agony here, but then again, who am I to talk? The only reason Dean is just now potty-trained is because I was too much of a wuss to consider the idea of him sitting on a public toilet (shudder). THANK GOODNESS the kid taught himself to do it standing. I may never have been able to touch him again if he ever touched a public potty. Ha!
Anywho, that was a lot of blab, long story short: WAY TO GO B on the gold-medal worthy (Olympic pun, lame) spoon usage. And way to go Chels for finally letting go. (Although, I see your point about the carpeting.) :o)
I say just throw him & his food outside with only a diaper on. Just hose him & the cement down when he's done. Easy cleanup, huh? (except don't really "throw" him outside. I'd hate for one of your neighbors to call CPS on you)
Don't feel bad, Emma might have been older when I gave her the spoon too, and you are right about the first child thing, why not forgo the mess and get the eating accomplished. I am better now, but let be honest...she is almost 3! :) Maybe baby no. 2 will get the spoon earlier...
p.s. its not like he is going to be 10 and not know how to use a spoon...
I know what you mean about a CARPETED eating area...you're so right they must NOT have kids or they were drunk or something! We had an apartment like that!!! I Hated it!!! At first I was like, "Chel give the kid a spoon" and then I read about the whole carpet thing...so sorry. Funny thing is, the next kid will be a pro with cereal and a spoon even faster. Mara was perfect by 12months and Ella has been doing it since 9 months. BUT (there's a BUT) I ALWAYS HAVE A HUGE mess!!! I know what you mean about not wanting a mess...kids :) Good Luck :)
love it! B, sometimes I give up on the spoon too. We all have times liek those.
